Does my AI agent need a proxy at all?
If it browses the public web from a fixed datacenter IP β yes. Cloudflare, DataDome, Akamai and Google reCAPTCHA all flag known datacenter ASNs (AWS, GCP, Azure, Hetzner) and challenge or block them. Residential proxy traffic looks like a normal home user and clears the same bot-scoring checks human users pass.
Will using a proxy slow down my agent?
Round-trip adds 30β80 ms typically β usually negligible vs the 1β5 s an LLM step takes. For latency-critical agents pick Static ISP plans (datacenter speed, residential trust). For background crawlers, rotating residential is fine.
How do I keep an agent's session sticky across multiple LLM steps?
Append -session-XXXXXXXX (any string) to the proxy username β Hell World will lock the same exit IP to that session for up to 30 minutes (residential) or indefinitely (ISP). Re-use the same session string across the agent's tool calls in one task.
Can I geo-target the agent's view of the web?
Yes. Add -country-US (or any ISO code) to the proxy username to force exits in that country. Premium pools also support -state-CA and -city-NewYork. Useful for agents checking localized SERP, prices, content availability.
Is this allowed by Anthropic / OpenAI?
Yes. Both Anthropic Computer Use and OpenAI Operator support OS-level / Playwright-level proxy configuration β no API change needed. The proxy is invisible to the LLM; it only changes which IP the underlying browser uses to reach a site.
