Lookups are answered by ipwho.is — your browser contacts them directly, so they see both the IP you type and the IP you're connecting from, under their own privacy policy. It never passes through our app. The hosting/datacenter label is a guess made from the network's name only — it is not a verified classification, and we never infer "residential" from the absence of a match.

What an IP lookup can — and can't — tell you

  • Country and rough location

    Country is usually right. City and coordinates are an estimate derived from the ISP's registration and routing data — they often point at a regional hub rather than the real location, and can be off by hundreds of kilometres. Treat city-level results as a hint, never as fact.

  • ASN and ISP — the reliable part

    The ASN (autonomous system number) and the organisation that owns it are registered routing data, so this is the most trustworthy field in any lookup. It tells you which network announces the IP: a home ISP, a mobile carrier, a university, or a cloud provider.

  • Datacenter or not

    This is the signal anti-bot systems care about most. IPs announced by AWS, Google Cloud, Hetzner or OVH are datacenter IPs and get flagged or rate-limited aggressively. Our label only fires when the network's name matches a known hosting provider — so a match is a useful hint, but no match proves nothing: company, university and transit networks look the same to it. It is a keyword guess, not a classification.

  • What it will never tell you

    An IP lookup does not give a street address, a name, or a device. It identifies a network, not a person. Only the ISP itself can map an IP to a subscriber, and it takes a legal request. Anyone claiming to "trace an IP to a person" with a free tool is selling you something.

Can I look up any IP address, or only my own?

Any public IPv4 or IPv6 address. Type it in the box above and press "Look up IP". Special-purpose ranges are rejected because they have no usable public owner or location: private networks (10.x, 192.168.x, 172.16–31.x), loopback and link-local, carrier-grade NAT, IPv6 ULA, and the ranges reserved for documentation, benchmarking, multicast and discard.

How accurate is IP geolocation?

Country accuracy is typically 95–99%. City accuracy is far weaker — commonly 50–75% and sometimes wildly wrong, because it is inferred from ISP registration and routing rather than measured. VPNs, proxies, mobile carriers and satellite links make it worse. Never treat the city or coordinates as proof of where someone is.

What is an ASN and why does it matter?

An ASN is the ID of the network that announces the IP to the internet — AS15169 is Google, AS7922 is Comcast. It is registered data, so it is the most reliable thing a lookup returns. Anti-bot vendors keep lists of "hosting" ASNs and treat traffic from them as suspicious by default.

Can I find out who owns an IP or trace it to a person?

You can see the organisation that owns the network (the ISP or hosting company), which is public routing data. You cannot get the subscriber behind it — that mapping lives with the ISP and is only released under a legal request. No free tool can do it, regardless of what it advertises.

Why does my proxy's IP show as a datacenter?

Because the network that announces it is named like a hosting provider — which usually means it is one. Cheap proxies run on cloud servers, so their ASN belongs to a hosting company and anti-bot systems flag them instantly. Residential and mobile proxies route through real consumer ISPs and mobile carriers, whose networks don't carry that name. Note the label is only a keyword guess: no match doesn't prove an IP is residential.
